Nature offers many examples of specialization and collaboration. Ant colonies and bee hives are but two examples of nature’s sophisticated organizations. Each thrives because their members specialize by tasks, divide labor, and collaborate to ensure food, safety, and general well-being of the colony or hive.

Of course, humans don’t fare too badly in this regard either. And healthcare is a great example. As specialists in the collection, access, and application of data, nurse informaticists collaborate with specialists on a regular basis to ensure that appropriate data is available to make decisions and take actions to ensure the general well-being of patients.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your own observations of and/or experiences with informaticist collaboration. You will also propose strategies for how these collaborative experiences might be improved.

In healthcare organizations, nurse informaticists and data/technology specialists play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between clinical practice and the efficient use of technology to improve patient care. These professionals often collaborate with a range of other healthcare providers, including nurses, physicians, administrators, and IT staff. However, their interactions and the effectiveness of these collaborations can sometimes be impacted by differences in professional language, technical knowledge, and roles (Cummings et al., 2019).

In my experience, nurse informaticists frequently work closely with other nurses to implement new electronic health record (EHR) systems or other health technologies. They often provide training sessions and troubleshooting support to ensure that nursing staff can use these tools effectively in their daily workflows. However, these interactions sometimes face challenges due to the technical complexity of the systems being introduced. For instance, when a new system is implemented, informaticists may have to deal with resistance from nurses who are not familiar with the technology or are reluctant to change their established practices (McBride & Tietze, 2020). For example, during the rollout of a new EHR system in our facility, the nurse informaticists worked directly with the nursing staff to explain new features, help resolve technical issues, and ensure that the system was being used to its full potential. While this collaboration was critical for the success of the system, there were challenges. Some nurses felt overwhelmed by the technical jargon, while others were frustrated with the perceived slow pace of training, which led to delays in the adoption process (McBride & Tietze, 2020).

On the other hand, data and technology specialists often collaborate with IT staff and physicians to analyze clinical data for improving patient outcomes. They focus on aggregating and analyzing large sets of clinical data to derive insights, which are then presented to healthcare providers. However, the interaction between data specialists and clinicians sometimes suffers from a lack of understanding regarding clinical workflows or the practical application of data findings (Cummings et al., 2019).

To improve these interactions, I suggest that a cross-disciplinary team approach be implemented. This approach would involve regular meetings where nurse informaticists, data specialists, nurses, physicians, and IT staff collaborate and discuss upcoming technological changes, patient data needs, and workflow concerns. This would help ensure that all parties understand each other’s perspectives and needs, fostering a more productive collaboration. Specifically, clinician-led training sessions for nurse informaticists could help improve communication, ensuring that the informaticists understand nursing workflows and can deliver more relevant and accessible training. Conversely, providing hands-on workshops where clinicians and technology specialists can work side by side could promote a better understanding of the technology’s potential and limitations (Larrabee & Bolden, 2021). In my organization, we could establish bi-weekly collaborative sessions where nursing staff, informaticists, and data specialists sit down together to work through a clinical case study using the EHR. This would not only help the nurse informaticists and data specialists understand the clinical context but also allow nursing staff to see how the technology can be used more effectively (Larrabee & Bolden, 2021).

The continued evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty will likely lead to more seamless integration of technology into clinical practice. As nurse informaticists continue to gain expertise in both nursing and technology, their ability to serve as intermediaries between clinical staff and IT professionals will improve. They will be better equipped to tailor technologies to meet the specific needs of different healthcare settings, reducing frustration and increasing adoption (McBride & Tietze, 2020). Furthermore, as new technologies (such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive analytics) emerge, their integration into healthcare systems will demand even closer collaboration between clinical professionals and technology specialists. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize patient care, but only if they are implemented in a way that aligns with clinical workflows and enhances the delivery of care. Nurse informaticists will be essential in guiding the integration of these technologies, ensuring that clinicians can use them effectively without disrupting their work (Cummings et al., 2019).

The evolving role of nurse informaticists will likely result in more effective interdisciplinary communication and a greater appreciation for the role of technology in enhancing patient care. Technology will no longer be seen as a separate entity but as a crucial part of the clinical environment that supports decision-making and improves patient outcomes (Larrabee & Bolden, 2021).

In the busy environment of the emergency room, nurse informaticists and data specialists play a key role in supporting patient care through technology. Nurse informaticists help make sure that systems like electronic health records (EHR) work well for doctors, nurses, and other staff. They also help improve workflows to make patient care more efficient. Data specialists focus on the technical side, ensuring that the data is accurate, secure, and easy to access.

From my experience in the ER, I’ve seen that nurse informaticists often work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff to help them use the EHR systems and other technology tools effectively. However, there can be challenges in communication because not all healthcare providers are comfortable with technology. For example, a nurse informaticist might introduce a new feature in the EHR that helps identify potential drug interactions. While this tool is meant to improve patient safety, some clinicians may not fully understand how to use it, leading to frustration or underuse.

Data specialists also play an important role but tend to have less direct interaction with clinical staff. For example, if there is a system outage, data specialists might not always be aware of how it affects the ER’s workflow, such as causing delays in accessing patient records. This lack of direct communication can lead to confusion or inefficiencies when the system doesn’t work as expected during a critical time.

Improvement Strategy: To improve these interactions, I suggest holding regular meetings where nurse informaticists, data specialists, and clinical staff can meet and discuss any issues with the systems and suggest improvements. These meetings could provide an opportunity for staff to share their experiences and get feedback on system updates. One of the hardest things for nurses is changing to a new computer program.  For example, after introducing a new system feature, nurses, doctors, and data specialists could meet to talk about what worked and what didn’t. Providing specific training that fits the fast-paced ER environment could also help clinical staff better understand how to use the technology in their daily work, making them more comfortable with it.

Impact of Technology and Nursing Informatics: As nursing informatics continues to grow and technology becomes more advanced, the way these professionals work together will likely change. Nurse informaticists will be even more important in helping clinicians use technology in a way that enhances patient care. New technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, could provide real-time decision support, helping doctors and nurses make better choices for patient care. For example, these tools might help predict patient conditions before they worsen, allowing for faster intervention. As technology continues to evolve, it will be even more important for nurse informaticists, data specialists, and clinical staff to work closely together to ensure that these tools are used effectively in the ER.

With more reliance on data to guide decision-making, ER nurses and other clinicians will need to become more skilled in understanding and using real-time data. Nurse informaticists will play a key role in making sure that these systems are helpful and easy to use, ensuring that staff can make the best decisions for patient care.

Nurse informaticists are key in mediating between clinics and IT professionals in health care organizations. Their proficiency in executing EHRs and data analysis increases clinical operations and expands positive patient treatment consequences (Kaihlanen et al., 2021). For instance, nurse informatics helps train the nursing staff to work correctly with EHR systems, document patients truthfully, and avoid mistakes in patients’ progress.

However, interaction between those professionals, including nurse informaticists, can be indirect even when such professionals remain critical in the healthcare sector. One useful strategy to improve these interactions is using a centralized electronic communication system that creates a real-time platform for everyone to share and work (Booth et al., 2021). For instance, an asynchronous communication tool can encourage timely feedback on data management problems or patient handling to enhance general flow.

The evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty will likely change professional interactions within healthcare. As technology evolves, nurse informaticians are the linchpin between clinical practice and technological innovation. This could yield smoother processes in patient care and decision-making, thus creating a culture of collaboration among healthcare professionals (Roles of Informatics Nurses Video, 2021). Integrating new technologies in healthcare provision advances the quality of care and empowers nurses to make better use of data in their practice.

Nurse informaticists within my healthcare organization interact with other professionals through Teams meetings for education sessions when there are updates to our EHR. Also, a representative from the nurse informatics team is present at our monthly quality meetings when requested projects need discussion. For instance, a quality improvement project was implemented by the transplant team to better identify the frailty of a patient by quantifiable metrics as part of pre-transplant workup by mining, analyzing, and synthesizing big data to improve patient outcomes (Mcgongil & Garver, 2022). However, the time allotted for education on the use and functionality of the frailty score was 10 minutes in a meeting with multiple topics.

One strategy for improving these interactions would be setting aside dedicated time to introduce new information and allowing ample time outside meetings for education.

The use of artificial intelligence is quickly emerging in the healthcare field. The emergence of this new technology will decrease the amount of time nurse informaticists spend on data abstraction and synthesis (Rony et al., 2024).

I have firsthand knowledge of how the collaboration of different specialties can work together to provide care for a patient.

In October 2022 I got my routine mammogram as I do every year in my birth month. I have done this for at least 10 years. I was blessed with fibrous breast, so I have always had complicated mammograms, and this year was no different. I was called back for a follow up scan. When I got to the follow up scan, the mammogram technician explained that I had changes from my previous scan, and they wanted to make sure they were benign. She explained that immediately after the scan the doctor would come in and talk to me about next steps. Scan done, in comes the doctor and he states that “it looks like cancer” so we have to do a biopsy to verify that it is not. I was scheduled to have a biopsy the next day. After the biopsy he said again that it looked like cancer and he would not be surprised if the pathology came back positive. He let me know that it was not very large and it was a very treatable size.

So now the wait……

Because of the world of informatics and how medical records are connected, the next day I got a call from my primary care doctor. She opened with, “had I looked at my chart?” I replied no, she let me know that the biopsy was positive for cancer, and we would have to wait for the type and staging. She assured me that I would be well taken care of because she sent messages to the best oncologist and surgeon. I was terrified and reassured at the same time. After she talked to me, I went home to tell my husband. We were able to see the results on MyChart and see the appointments that had already been made for me to follow up with this positive biopsy.

The nurse became the patient. And the rollercoaster ride of biopsies, scans, and tests to confirm and re confirm that it was cancer and that it was not spread to any other organs was begun. The information would pop up in MyChart before I would get a phone call. The information was at my fingertips, and I could look at and follow up with appointments.

As a nurse I was amazed at the cooperation between providers, the coordination of my care. There were some hiccups. Sometimes appointments were made without consideration for my time. I would have appointments every day in a week instead of scheduling them together. I had to call and reschedule several appointments. There also was a mix up in the order of scans. I had a bone scan one day and was scheduled to have a heart scan the next day. Which had to be rescheduled because the contrast they gave me for the bone scan was still in my system and they would not be able to see my heart. The other issue for non-medical patients is that a lot of the test results are hard to understand. Not having a provider explain what it means can lead to anxiety and misunderstandings. There are a few cases where it cannot seem very personable because the information is just listed in your chart, but providers were very good about calling within 24 hours.

Overall, I feel that because of the informatics and connections between systems, I received the best care. My Nurse Navigator was just that. She helped me navigate the rollercoaster that my life became for a year. She was able to look at every test and scan, get me medications for my symptoms, message the doctor for any complaints I had. And calm my nerves when some test would pop up that I didn’t understand. Her job was to make sure that my care was coordinated and my symptoms were managed. And she used the technology of informatics to do so.

Interaction Between Nurse Informatics and Other Specialties 

In order to discover, define, manage, and disseminate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing science, the discipline known as nursing informatics (NI) combines nursing with other information management and analytical sciences. Healthcare professionals and organizations collect and interpret data more effectively as technology advances. In order to accomplish a desired result, nursing informatics assists nurses, consumers, patients, and other stakeholders in making decisions in all roles and situations.

Due to its efficiency, nursing informatics is a new culture that all nurses need to adopt.  Patient treatment may suffer if all relevant information is not available. By better coordinating this data, informatics enables nurses to provide patients with all the information they require to enhance satisfaction and results. Nurse informatics interacts with other healthcare professionals in a variety of ways, including as gathering information for an incident report, which I have seen firsthand at work.  In accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures, every incident, event, irregular occurrence, and variation is recognized and recorded. For instance, in the event of a fall, we phone the manager and supervisor and fill out an incident report form.  This is to allow the facility and medical staff the chance to deal with the problem, stop similar incidents or events from happening again, monitor trends, and find any gaps so that any potential improvements can be made. Monitoring the drug administration system and providing staff with feedback is another way I have seen nursing informatics work with my healthcare company. The percentage and trend of how we follow through on scanning patients’ wristbands, verifying their information, and scanning the medication prior to administration are distributed to all nursing staff members. This will make the hospital’s medicine administration system safer and more effective. Simpson (2015) 

Impact of Nursing Informatics on the Nursing Profession

Nurses need to be open to learning and challenged to pick up new skills. The field of nursing informatics is transforming healthcare. As technology develops, healthcare practitioners and organizations may better gather, process, and use data, which will impact daily team operations, resource management, and care delivery.  Despite the fact that nursing’s objective has not altered, informatics is having an impact on these professionals’ day-to-day job as they pay attention to the precision and dissemination of patient care and data.  In order to quickly apply new clinical insights and enhance patient outcomes, the healthcare systems being adopted in larger healthcare systems integrate both organized and unstructured data. Instead of data saving, which was a feature of the previous competitive healthcare environment, the system is built on data sharing. (McGonigle and Mastrian, 2024). The way people connect professionally will be greatly impacted by this. This allows you to spend more time caring for the patient and less time waiting for the provider to respond to the patient’s care. This emphasizes how crucial it is for us as frontline healthcare professionals to communicate freely and easily with those creating our EHR.

Technology is used in every department within a healthcare organization, from electronic health records (EHR) to assignment boards to track patients.  One interaction between nursing informaticists and other professionals within my organization was our recent transition to vital sign monitors that would transmit the vital signs to the EHR of the patient in the room.  As nurses spend 1/3 of their shift performing routine tasks, this would save the time taken from manually inputting patient vital signs (ANA Resource Hub, 2024).  The nurse informaticists were amazing.  They ensured all the monitors were working properly and stayed on our unit for one full week to work out any issues we may have.  They gave us instruction on how to use the monitors, functions that allowed closer monitoring of critical patients, and how to have the vital signs cross into the EHR.  They seamlessly worked with CNAs, LPNs, RNs, and our nurse leaders.  One strategy that may improve the interactions between the nurse informaticists and other healthcare professionals would be to include a team member from the discipline you were working with in the implementation of new changes.  This will allow both the IT personnel and the other healthcare disciplines to work out many of the issues that may come with these technological changes prior to their introduction.  In the above referenced scenario, having someone from our department assist in the creation and implementation of this system may have cut down on some of the detailed issues we had.  Our Preop unit is extraordinarily busy as our hospital is in the top 35 largest hospitals in the nation.  We have four different preop units with the first unit to change being our busiest with the most critical patients.  Having someone from our department assist with things like how often blood pressure needs to be measured, how high or low we wanted alarms for heart rates and respiratory rates, and various individualization of these machines would have made a smoother transition as we were often being asked questions while trying to get all patients checked in safely and timely.

The continued emergence of new technologies can greatly impact professional interactions in healthcare.  While these technologies can have great benefits, such as the ability to hold meetings virtually to include professionals from across the globe, there are some downsides as well.  Face-to-face interactions allow body language cues that help put the correct tone into the interaction (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022).  Without these body language cues a person may be misunderstood as being rude or condescending.  Furthermore, face-to-face interactions require certain levels of involvement from all parties that can be seen and felt, with no guessing that the parties involved were both seen and heard (Haland & Melby, 2015).  This may get lost with technology as it is often hard to tell if the participants are truly engaged in the conversation.  To conclude, many great things have come from technology; however, the engagement that is seen and felt in face-to-face interactions are often lost with the use of technology and may greatly impact interactions between healthcare professionals.

Experiences with Nurse Informaticists in Healthcare

As an emergency nurse at AdventHealth, I have observed how nurse informaticists bridge the gap between clinical staff and technology systems. For example, nurse informaticists were pivotal in ensuring a smooth transition while implementing a new electronic health record (EHR) system. They collaborated with nurses to gather input on system design, trained staff on its use, and addressed technical issues post-implementation. Their clinical background was invaluable, as they understood the workflow and anticipated potential challenges that non-clinical IT staff might overlook.

However, one area for improvement is fostering greater collaboration between informaticists and bedside nurses in the early stages of technology development. Often, nurses feel that new tools are imposed on them rather than designed with their input.

Strategy to Improve Interactions

One strategy to enhance these interactions is establishing regular multidisciplinary focus groups that include bedside nurses, informaticists, and IT specialists. For instance, these groups could meet monthly to discuss ongoing issues, suggest improvements, and evaluate the effectiveness of current systems. By involving frontline staff early and continuously, nurse informaticists can ensure technology solutions are both user-friendly and clinically relevant.

Impact of Advancing Nursing Informatics

The continued evolution of nursing informatics and emerging technologies will significantly impact professional interactions. As systems become more sophisticated—such as predictive analytics tools and artificial intelligence (AI)—nurse informaticists must collaborate even more closely with clinicians to interpret data and integrate it into patient care. For example, AI-driven decision-support tools will require training and oversight to ensure they complement rather than hinder clinical judgment.

Additionally, as technology advances, interprofessional collaboration will likely increase. For instance, nurses, informaticists, and IT specialists may need to work together to tailor AI systems to specific care settings, such as emergency or pediatric care. This evolution could foster a more inclusive and cooperative culture within healthcare organizations, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

For instance, when preparing an appeal, clinical nurse analysts interpret complex medical records and simplify clinical jargon for attorneys, ensuring legal arguments are based on accurate medical information.

Effective communication is vital for streamlining data retrieval and analysis, as the patient’s medical record is the primary source for appeal information. Information specialists manage electronic health records (EHRs), which facilitate the collection and sharing of comprehensive health information (Atasoy et al., 2019). Clinical nurse analysts contribute by interpreting medical data, summarizing justifications for medical necessity, and suggesting clear presentations of medical information for legal evaluations. In healthcare organizations nurse informaticists and data specialists are crucial as they blend knowledge with abilities to improve patient care and operational effectiveness. They serve as connectors linking healthcare staff and tech experts to enable the use of resources such, as electronic health records (EHRs) and decision support systems. They encounter obstacles in their collaborations, with colleagues stemming from varying expertise levels, communication approaches and work processes.

In the healthcare institution where I work, nurse informaticist work closely with clinical staff to develop and enhance EHR systems. For example, when introducing an EHR module to streamline discharge procedures training sessions are conducted, for nurses to get acquainted with the system. Although these sessions were thorough, even technically proficient nurses on duty found it challenging to adjust to the changes. Expressed a need for practical support during their shifts. The disparity between training and practical use in real life scenarios has caused inaccuracies in discharge paperwork. For instance, a workshop introducing an EHR module could include activities like role playing scenarios where nurses engage in simulations of patient care tasks such as recording a prescription or examining laboratory findings. The practical method described would enable nurse informaticists to receive input and tweak the system before rolling it out (Sipes,2016).

 

Creating a culture of teamwork by providing feedback can enhance comprehension in addition to training efforts in the workplace setting. One approach involves data experts conducting sessions to elaborate on performance indicators and their practical implications using real life scenarios or case studies. For example, in a discussion on forecast analytics for hospital readmissions a scenario illustrating how identification of patients at risk can influence nursing care decisions could be shared. These initiatives aim to clarify the use of resources and establish confidence, among healthcare professionals to effectively utilize data (American Nurses Association [ANA] 2015).

The Evolution of Nursing Informatics Influence

 

As nursing informatics advances further into the future of healthcare practice and collaboration, among professionals in fields become increasingly crucial due to the incorporation of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning and telehealth platforms are reshaping the landscape. The demand for teamwork between nurse informaticists and clinicians with expertise in handling data has surged as AI driven tools for detecting sepsis on have become more prevalent in clinical settings. Nurse informaticists play a role in providing training and addressing issues such as alarms and user friendliness when implementing AI guided decision support systems, for sepsis detection. This requires working with the nurses on duty to improve the algorithms and make sure they align with our caregiving practices as suggested by McBride and colleagues in 2020.

 

In addition, to that the use of telehealth technologies has broadened the field of informatics. Nurse informaticists are now required to collaborate with IT teams and medical staff to improve virtual care systems. This includes ensuring that these platforms are easy to use and adhere to privacy regulations, which necessitates communication. With the emergence of technologies like health monitoring devices informaticists must also work closely with clinicians to incorporate patient generated data into treatment plans promoting a joint commitment, to technology driven healthcare (Topaz & Ronquillo 2021).

 

The ongoing progress in nursing informatics has highlighted the importance of clinicians acquiring informatics skills well. Nurses are now more involved in using analytics dashboards and electronic care coordination tools than before and therefore must gain basic knowledge in interpreting data and utilizing technology. This change could revolutionize how professionals work together by promoting teamwork and creativity which would ultimately improve results.

The interaction between nurse informaticists and other professionals within healthcare settings exemplifies the importance of collaboration and specialization, much like the dynamic ecosystems observed in nature. Nurse informaticists play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between clinical practice and technology, ensuring that data is effectively utilized to enhance patient outcomes.

 

One experience that comes to mind with regard to this collaboration is the implementation of a new EHR system at my previous workplace. During this time, the nurse informaticist was in collaboration with bedside nurses, IT specialists, and unit managers to ensure a smooth transition. They conducted training sessions, addressed workflow concerns, and worked closely with the IT team to troubleshoot technical issues that arose during the initial rollout. The collaboration was instrumental in limiting resistance to change from the staff and also in making the EHR system meet the requirements of different departments.

 

Even in this successful implementation, there were a lot of hiccups along the way, especially in communications between the IT team and the clinical staff. For instance, technical jargon often led to misunderstandings, while some nurses felt their inputs were not valued. To enhance these interactions, one possible strategy could be that within the team, one nurse informaticist was to be assigned the role of a liaison, acting as the main communicator between IT specialists and clinical staff. This person translates technical terms into understandable language and presents clinical staff’s concerns on system development and troubleshooting. For example, in the case of a system upgrade, this liaison can advocate for changes based on nurse feedback to ensure there is no disruption in clinical workflow.

 

Continued growth and development of nursing informatics as a specialty will only support these professional relationships. The evolution of advanced technologies, such as AI and mobile health apps, will further expand roles into predictive analytics and personalized care planning. As Ng, Alexander, and Frith (2018) states, mobile health applications provide opportunities for nurse informaticists to be involved in population health initiatives, which require interdisciplinary collaboration to address community-specific health challenges. Similarly, Sipes (2016) emphasizes the importance of project management skills for nurse informaticists, which will be crucial as technology integration continues to become more complex. By developing strong communication and leadership skills, nurse informaticists can lead effective collaboration that benefits both patients and healthcare teams.

 

In conclusion, nurse informaticists cannot leverage technology to their advantage without collaboration from other professionals. The Communication barriers and interdisciplinary understanding need to be addressed in order to provide more strength to these collaborations. As the technology continues to evolve, it will require nurse informaticists to play an increasingly integral role in fostering innovation and assuring that healthcare systems remain patient-centered.

In my experience working as a nurse on a neuro or spine floor, fall risk management is essential to patient safety. Every time a fall occurs, I coordinate closely with the nurse informatics team to ensure the incident is accurately documented in the electronic health record (EHR) system and analyze the data for patterns or contributing factors. For example, after a fall event, I provide the nurse informaticist with a detailed description of the incident, including patient status, full vital signs, and interventions before the fall. The nurse informaticist then ensures that the fall risk data is updated in the system, often working with data specialists to identify any gaps in the current fall risk assessment protocols or technology (such as bed alarm, nursing station alarm, and nursing phone connection to the bed) that could be improved. These fall risk data are then analyzed using advanced algorithms or data mining tools, which help recognize trends or systemic issues—such as certain medications, any technological problem, or patient conditions that may not have been considered in the original risk assessment—allowing us to refine prevention strategies (Chen et al., 2021).

A key interaction often involves discussing how technology, such as electronic monitoring devices, bed alarm connection to the nursing phone, or predictive analytics, can be integrated into patient care workflows to help identify at-risk patients earlier and reduce the likelihood of falls. The nurse informaticist might provide feedback on how the EHR’s fall risk assessment algorithm works in practice, and I will share real-time insights from the clinical floor on whether it’s effective or if there are instances where it fails to capture critical risk factors. Additionally, as newer technologies are introduced, I work with the informaticist to ensure that they are seamlessly integrated into the existing workflow without disrupting care delivery. For instance, implementing wearable devices that track patient movements can provide real-time data that can be used to assess mobility and alert staff to potential fall risks before they occur (Hall et al., 2024).

Imagine a bed alarm that automatically activates for patients at fall risk, based on artificial intelligence analyzing the side effects of the medications the patient is receiving and the surgery they have just undergone.

As nursing informatics continues to evolve, I anticipate the increased use of AI and machines to improve how we identify fall risks. These innovations could predict which patients are at risk of falling and notify nurses before an incident occurs. The technology could analyze factors such as the patient’s recent procedure and medications, automatically activating the bed alarm for at-risk patients. Furthermore, wearable devices and smart beds powered by AI could also transform how we assess and manage fall risk in patients, providing more precise, immediate feedback to nurses and PCTs. This could lead to fewer falls, more accurate data collection, and better communication between all involved professionals. The continued development of these technologies will also foster deeper collaboration across disciplines. Nurses, data specialists, and informaticists will increasingly work together to translate complex data into actionable insights, ultimately improving patient outcomes (Watson, 2024).

Informatics will continue to utilize acquired knowledge and technologies to advance healthcare. As technology evolves, nurses will increasingly engage with various applications integrated into healthcare and education. This ongoing transformation enhances nursing experiences (McGonigle and Mastrian, 2022, p. 611). In my organization, nurse informaticists collaborate frequently with clinical experts and nurse executives during meetings and project implementations to optimize efficiency. Their teamwork is vital for integrating insights across disciplines, with nursing leadership essential for improving nursing practices and patient care. This collaboration aims to enhance nursing informatics and improve patient outcomes (Mosier et al., 2019).

A nurse leader can collaborate with informaticists on various projects to improve healthcare outcomes through technology. Leadership is essential in developing nursing informatics solutions due to their in-depth knowledge of care. Nursing leaders propose a structured, systems-level approach that emphasizes strong leadership from nursing executives. This approach focuses on defined responsibilities, respect for expertise, and commitment to project goals, allowing nursing leaders to effectively manage informatics solutions’ development (Mosier et al., 2019).

Observations:

Communication and feedback among nurse informaticists, data, information technology specialists, clinicians, and administrators seem challenging. Using technical terminology and a limited grasp of clinical workflows can obstruct effective Communication.

Healthcare professionals and administrators may not grasp the nuances of healthcare technology. This can result in overly optimistic expectations or a failure to utilize the technology’s capabilities fully. Data analysts can assist healthcare providers in making decisions based on data by offering insights derived from their analysis. I have witnessed firsthand how data-driven decision-making can enhance healthcare results. (Mosier et al., 2019).

Strategy for Improvement

Other professionals should receive additional training and education so that nurse informaticists, data, and technology specialists can collaborate with clinicians to foster a deeper understanding. Educators play a crucial role in preparing students for these changes, requiring them to adopt new technologies actively. Future healthcare workers—including providers, researchers, and instructors—must continuously learn and adapt to emerging technologies, using their knowledge to enhance care practices (McGonigle and Mastrian, 2022, p.612).

Example. At the facility where I work, MEDITECH is the EHR used. Training takes place periodically to ensure nurses are doing the right things. The informaticists and data/ technology specialists provide education on new technologies and workflows. Clinicians and administrators are encouraged to attend and provide the necessary feedback.

Impact of the continued evolution of nursing informatics and Emerging Technologies:

Big data significantly transforms healthcare delivery and nursing practice. Nurse informaticists lead teams of statisticians and computer scientists to analyze and interpret data, enhancing nursing knowledge. By utilizing advanced technologies like AI and machine learning, they uncover insights that lead to improved patient care. This allows for identifying patterns and trends, comparing patient outcomes, and exploring predictive analytics. As technology evolves, the potential to harness big data will grow, further impacting patients and healthcare practices (McGonigle and Mastrian, 2022, p.617).

Nurse informaticists in a hospital setting work closely to ensure that the electronic health systems used by nurses and physicians are simplified and not complex for clinical care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). Nurse informaticists observing that staff are having issue with the system’s complexity regarding clinical documentation. Informatic then works with the IT department to simplify the system, to make it more user-friendly and customize it to the specific needs of clinical care. This helps to improve efficiency which in turn, improves patient care.

A method to enhance collaboration among nurse informaticists and healthcare professionals is to establish frequent interdisciplinary meetings. These sessions would include nurse informaticists, clinical personnel, and IT experts to address on current issues, and effectiveness. For Example, if a new program in the electronic health record (EHR) system is introduced, and problems arise.  A meeting could be organized to collect instant feedback from nurses and doctors, facilitating quick modifications and enhancements. This method would guarantee the continued efficiency of the program’s effectiveness, meeting the need of patients and providers.

As informatics grows increasingly vital in healthcare, nurse informaticists are set to play a larger role in decision-making concerning technology implementation and data management. The continuous evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty, particularly with emerging technologies such as telemedicine, aims to enhance patient outcomes by offering prompt care that minimizes the necessity for in-person visits, thereby significantly improving accessibility (ANA, 2024). Nurse informaticists and data analysts work with other specialists to solve certain organizational issues. They can also partner with infection control teams to create dashboards tracking HAIs, for instance. They’re also useful for clinicians to spot patterns, take preventative action, and measure their success. Nor do nurse informaticists collaborate with radiologists to optimize image-sharing infrastructure, providing access to diagnostic scans quickly and securely without compromising patient outcomes (Schoenbaum & Carroll, 2022; HIMSS, 2022).

One way to improve these engagements is by having cross-functional project teams for large projects like EHR migrations or IT rollouts. For example, by collaborating on the planning stage with nurse informaticists, clinical employees, IT experts and administrators, there is space for multiple points of view so that the final solution is inclusive to everyone. Streamlined feedback loops where colleagues can submit problems and receive frequent updates also reinforce cooperation (Schoenbaum & Carroll, 2022).

The nursing informatics evolution will continue to influence work relationships as emerging technologies such predictive modeling and machine learning enter care. Nurse informaticists will presumably become trainers, teaching teams to interpret and use the high-level data analytics. It will become a society of continual learning and adaptation, and it will require increased interdisciplinarity to ensure best outcomes for patients (Stephenson, 2023).

There are many theories as to the caring nurse.  According to McGonigal and Mastrian (2022), most of the work and research around caring has been done in nursing. Dr. Jean Watson developed The Theory of Human Caring, and this theory developed into ten carative factors to now the caritas processes.  These ten caring practices can guide us in our personal and professional lives.   They include embracing, inspiring, trusting, nurturing, forgiving, deepening, balancing, co-creating, ministering, and opening (Watson, 2024).  McGonigal and Mastrian (2022) also describe The Cycle of Caring as having professional attachments and appropriate separation.  There is also under-attachment and over-attachment in the Cycle of Caring.  These are the lack of connection (under-attachment) or when the professional becomes too emotionally vested in the patient (over-attachment).  Is caring a learned behavior, or is it an innate behavior?

According to the American Nurses Association (ANA) (2023), nursing informatics is “the integration of nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice”.  We have been using robotics in surgery, telemedicine in neurology and psychiatry in the ER, and certain web-based apps on phones for the population that is so rural that this is only the way to get healthcare for them.  McGonigal and Mastrian (2022) also report that we are entering the arena of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), and we are already in the world of artificial intelligence (AI).  We are beginning to use robots to do tasks in the hospital, such as cleaning, and the plan is that these robots may be able to do certain patient care items, such as delivering ice water and medicines. Will robots be able to learn how to care for and connect with our patients, and are we replacing human interaction with that of a robot? Will it be as authentic and genuine?  This is a critical piece that must be considered in this issue.

Nursing informatics is an essential part of caring for patients. There is no doubt it has advanced health records, health research, knowledge, and patient care, just to name a few. I am just curious about some of the robotic parts. If a robot can clean, fold laundry, and bring medications to the nurse from the pharmacy, these are very helpful and will help nursing and healthcare staff. I hold my breath on the patient interaction with robots, especially the older patient with dementia just as an example.

I work in the emergency department and work nights.  The informatic tech arrives every morning, around 6 am, to check if we have any technological issues, suggestions, or need any help.  This morning, I asked him if he had ever had problems sharing or receiving knowledge from the nursing staff.  He stated, “I think your jobs are tough, and we all work very well together to streamline the process.”  I do feel the same; we are able to communicate our issues with him, and he approaches each nurse and doctor every day.  I asked if there was a committee comprised of bedside staff and IT, but at this hospital, he stated that at his level, there is not, but maybe there is way above us.”  I feel that bedside staff, comprising nurses, doctors, techs, and all ancillary staff, should be on a committee with informatics that meets monthly to discuss issues with technology and provide input on changes that could increase productivity and patient care.

Nursing informatics is an absolute must in healthcare and is extremely beneficial in advancing knowledge and patient care. We must approach some things with care and questioning to make sure we do not inadvertently harm our patients by not connecting with them mentally. Will they feel heard by a robot? This is my main concern about the robotic advancement of nursing informatics.

In my experience within healthcare settings, nurse informaticists and technology specialists frequently collaborate to improve patient care through data-driven decision-making and efficient workflow design. One notable interaction I’ve observed involves the collaboration between nurse informaticists and data analysts during the implementation of a new electronic health record (EHR) system. Nurse informaticists bring in-depth knowledge of clinical workflows and the needs of nurses and other healthcare providers. At the same time, data analysts focus on ensuring that the system collects and analyzes relevant data efficiently.

For instance, during a system upgrade, nurse informaticists work closely with IT professionals to ensure that the new software meets the needs of frontline nurses, such as streamlining documentation and ensuring timely access to patient data. During this process, there are constant feedback loops between nurses and IT specialists to identify areas where the system could be improved. In one specific case, the EHR implementation team gathered input from nurses about which data fields were most useful in improving patient care and incorporated those insights into the final system design. This type of collaboration ensures that the technology aligns with clinical practice, ultimately improving efficiency and patient safety.

One area where these collaborations could be improved is in the communication between nurse informaticists and other non-clinical staff. Often, non-clinical stakeholders, such as IT teams or administrative personnel, might not fully understand the clinical perspective, leading to potential misalignments in priorities. A strategy to address this challenge could be to establish more structured communication channels, such as regular multidisciplinary team meetings or collaborative workshops, where both clinical and non-clinical stakeholders come together to discuss issues and share insights. In these meetings, nurse informaticists could provide real-world examples of how data integration impacts patient care, while IT specialists could explain technical constraints or possibilities. This would help ensure that all stakeholders are aligned and working toward the same goals.

As nursing informatics continues to evolve as a specialty, the impact of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, will likely enhance collaborations between healthcare professionals. Nurse informaticists will play a key role in evaluating and implementing these technologies in clinical settings, ensuring they are used effectively to support patient care. The introduction of AI, for example, could help identify patient trends or predict outcomes based on vast datasets, requiring close collaboration between informaticists, nurses, and IT specialists to ensure that these tools are used to improve patient outcomes rather than creating new barriers to care. In the long term, these evolving technologies will foster a more integrated, data-driven healthcare system that enhances both the efficiency and quality of patient care.

Within the ED, we utilize multiple technology areas, mostly through the EHR and other web-based services. We use these to communicate through the ED and collaborate with specialty services, admission doctors, and transfers to outlying facilities. If something goes awry in the system, we all have issues getting our patients the care they need promptly. We are also going to be transitioning to another EHR within the next year. Since I have been employed with this company, we are on our 3rd new charting system. With each merger, we have a group of people who do their education before the switch. They become superusers to help with the transition period and aid those who travel to our facility with any questions or problems we encounter.

During periods of transition, it is important for nursing leaders to be readily available to respond to issues that will come about so they can help with getting them fixed promptly. Although we train people within our department to help with questions, we will rely on a lot of those who will be coming from the company to help with any IT issues that will come about. They will not always be readily available, however, because we will be switching our entire hospital system. Typically, when something like this happens the IT specialists don’t have full knowledge of how one area or another will work, they just look at the whole picture so individualized questions aren’t answered by them, they will come from those trained within our unit.

I am one of the nurses who will be helping with the transition of our new system, so understanding the importance of nursing informatics is an asset for me to encompass. As it stands, I know little about our new system because I have worked very little with it, but in the coming months, I hope to be proficient before it is rolled out to our hospital. Those who are helping have been chosen because we work hard and have the patient’s best interest at heart. We aim to work through challenges and help get things correct when they need to be corrected. That is an important aspect of nursing informatics.

Issues that typically arise when we are in transition periods are the people who come down from the companies are not always helpful or available. There is no way that they can send enough people to be ready to help everyone when an entire hospital system is changing. That leaves the nursing staff in the units to help their colleagues. Likely during this time, I will have an assignment, so I can help but will not be readily available for every person who has questions. Hopefully, that won’t be the case, but due to staffing that’s how it will look. Other issues will include staff who are unwilling to change and learn. We have nurses who “don’t know, what they don’t know” which means they will use excuses to get them through not getting their work done promptly. Instead of asking questions, they will ignore what they don’t know to sit on their patients. Ultimately it takes a team effort. Doctors, nurses, aides, ancillary departments, and IT specialists to make it happen just must be willing to put in the work. Training more staff and ensuring that those who are trained are incentivized to come in and help their colleagues through a transition period would be a huge help. Being a resource without taking a team of patients or charging will be game-changing to getting a new system up and running. It will also be helpful to have management staff readily available to help as well.
